The Host (Review)
REVIEW : THE HOST (2013)
Stephanie Meyer is an American fiction writer and film producer nowadays. Her famous work is vampire romance series that known as Twilight. This novel is very popular from her and has been filmed as series movie also. Twilight also being as the best-selling book of 2008 in bookstore. Her another work that also being famous is The Host. If Twilight tells about vampire that fall in love with human, The Host tells about the relationship human between alien. This science-fiction novel released in May 2008, also has been filmed with the same title—The Host— on May 29, 2013 that produced by herself.
The movie directed by Andrew Niccol. It tells the story of Melanie Stryder (Saoirse Ronan) and the soul named Wanderer that called as Wanda, they are a young woman and an alien “soul” that invaded Melanie’s body, and forced to do anything as one. The earth has been invaded by alien race that take over the human minds and staying the human’s body intact. Wanda, the invading “soul” who lives in Melanie’s body, didn’t expect that its former—Melanie— refusing her to living in her body and always present to her mind, Melanie didn’t give up yet. Then after long time Wanda stays in Melanie’s body and Melanie still keep staying in her mind, Wanda can see the visions of Jared (Max irons) and her little brother, Jamie (Chandler Canterbury), and anything about her uncle and the shelter of the others survived human.
The plot is more complicated when Wanda and Melanie arrived in the shelter, no body trust Wanda and thought her that she is just like the other seekers outside there and will call them to catch the survived human there. But still there are persons who believe that Wanda will bring some things good for them, especially Melanie who still stays on her body’s mind. She also meet Jared and Jamie in the shelter, then Ian (Jake Abel), a person who attracted to the new Melanie—Wanda-.
The Host was filmed in Louisiana and much in New Mexico where a band of surviving humans hide inside an almost extinct volcano, and started filming in February 2012. Andrew Niccol also the co-writer of the script with Stephanie Meyer, besides he is the director. He is a screenwriter, producer, and director with so many works that worked by him. He wrote and directed Gattaca (1997), Simon (2002), Lord of War (2005), In Time (2011), Good Kill (2014), and The Host in 2013. His films’ ground rules limit the depth and variety of possible relationships, and The Host is one of its. His films tend to explore social, cultural and political issues, as well an artificial realities or simulation.
